My HI Life

A collegiate's take on island life

Hey guys,

Yes, I'm currently in that mood where I'm thinking too much and starting to realize how much I've done this past semester. I'm not going to make this post a flashback kind of thing, but I've done so much growing and exploring these past few months that it's hard not to feel proud, and bittersweet.

Yes, things have been pretty bittersweet lately.

As my last two weeks come to a close, it's hard to think about what I'm going to be doing when I go home. The culture shock of going from living floors away from my friends, to miles apart is going to be hard. I'm so glad I've been able to keep myself busy, because I know that if I think about Hawaii, and UHM, too much that I will begin to feel more of this "sad bittersweet" feeling.

But like I said, this post isn't going to be like that! Instead, I am so eager to share with you all what I've been up to.

This past week, while it flew by, was another one full of new experiences! For starters, I registered for classes this past Friday. That's right, we're so close to the end of the semester that I'm even picking new classes. Can you believe it's already that time?! I feel like I should refer to this whole process as something "we've" done, because you guys have been reading since before move in day. Isn't that crazy?

My spring lineup is one I'm very excited about. I'm giving myself a little break and starting later in the day, at 9:30, and ending a little earlier as well, 2:30. I'm taking another full coarse load (16 credits, one less than this semester) and am excited to be taking an Intro to East Asia class! The others are: Chinese 202, Math 100, Sociology 100 Honors, Science Honors, Intro to East Asia. Needless to say, I am very happy with this schedule.

Also- I think it's worth mentioning that I was accepted into the Chinese Flagship Program at UH! For those of you that are unaware, the Flagship program is a way to achieve a deeper fluency in a certain language. At UH the only language with Flagship are Chinese and Korean. For me to be accepted is something I am very excited about, because I am required to study abroad and required to intern in China. While I don't really want to work in China, I'm still looking forward to being back and taking China all in once again. The only question is where I should study...

Next up, I went snorkeling for the second time! On Friday I went to Hanauma Bay with my friend Eric and, with my fins and mask, was able to snorkel in the Bay. For Hawaii residents and students, be sure to bring your ID with you and your admission is free. Granted, everyone has to sit through this 9 minute video about the bay, by bringing your ID you'll be saving around $7. Also, compared to Paradise Cove, Hanauma was a much different experience. The tide was relatively low and the waves were pretty rocky. As a pretty strong swimmer I think it's important to say that I struggled in the beginning. I was actually surprised with how claustrophobic I felt when I first went in. The longer I was in the water, and the more swimming I did, the easier it became breathing underwater. It was also a worrying how low the water was when all thats below you is coral. However, I'm glad I went so that I have a better idea of what time is best to go snorkeling. From the tide to claustrophobia, I can see how snorkeling may not be everyone's thing, but I've already made it clear I want to go again and this time to see turtles. Once we finished up at Hanauma we grabbed dinner and went back to campus. If you find yourself in the Hanauma Bay/ Koko Head area, a nice shopping complex down the road (like you're going to Waikiki) is where I would recommend getting something to eat. The options range from on-the-water dining to cheap sushi.

While I don't have any pictures of me snorkeling I hope you enjoy some of what Hanauma looks like in the afternoon:

I think the next time I go, if I go, will be when there's a higher tide. I would advise others do the same, as it's pretty daunting to go swimming in shallow water with only coral under you.

Now onto today. Firstly, it was a rough start. I hate being "that person" but I overslept. I woke up to a phone call from my friend asking me if I was still interested in going, and, in my half sleep state, managed to stutter out a "just go without me". I absolutely hate when I sleep in and hate having people wait on me, so I made it clear she was more than welcome to leave and I would not be offended. However, to my surprise, she was very understanding and told me she would wait. I quickly got ready, I didn't even put in my contacts, and made my way downstairs and onto the craft fairs. We made very good time, which is expected because the locations were very near campus. I was able to score some great Christmas gifts, so as much as I would love to share photos of what I bought, I don't think it's going to be possible. Compared to the Swap Meet, these two craft fairs were much more personal and a lot less touristy. I'm not one to usually go to craft fairs, due to a lack of them where I come from, but I really liked these. I can't wait for the next one, as I might pick some things up for myself that day. The next thing I want to do is try out some of the farmers markets that are on Oahu. I've heard of a few, but I probably won't go to one until I get back.

As for the rest of the weekend, I don't have any plans. In a way this feels weird, as usually the girls and I have plans made or at least an idea of what we want to do. Interestingly, the girls are all doing their own thing their week. I don't know what they're planing on doing tomorrow, as I feel like I haven't seen them in a while, but I would hope they invite me if they've got plans. I actually went back to their dorm the other night and studied with them. It was nice, but I couldn't stay longer than an hour. I felt like I was getting nothing done, so I called it a night and went back to my building. From there I worked on the roof and was able to get almost all of my Chinese homework done. Out of all of my classes Chinese is definitely the most demanding, so to get a lot of the work done was a great feeling.

I hope you're all enjoying your weekend.

Until next time,

Ahh! Is that a picture?! I'm so happy to be posting some more for you all. My posts have been kind of dry lately (for lack of a better word) and as a result I've found myself not including pictures. While this has messed with the overall theme of my blog, I am relieved that I have some to share with you. In the midst of all this college excitement, here is a few I've taken over my weekend. Let's start with the one above. Taken this past Saturday, it was shot right after I attempted surfing. Also worth mentioning is the time I spent on the water. Never having surfed before, I paddled out expecting no more than an hour. Quite possibly a perk of being a college student, the company I rented the board from let me borrow it for over two hours for only $10! However that's besides the point. What I really want to talk about it how difficult surfing is! Before arriving I joked with my friends that, "Anyone can stand on a surfboard!" But I was so wrong. It seems that the ocean was in a playful mood, as I was tossed, turned, and dunked underwater numerous times. But throughout all of that I can't discredit the fact that being on the water, on that huge board, was nothing short of amazing. Sitting on the still water, with Diamond Head in clear view and no one around, allowed me some good time to reflect. As I've said before, I was originally not going to come to Hawaii. Believe it or not there was a time where I seriously considered rescinding my acceptance and going to California, instead. Since being here there has never been a time (except move-in day) where I have regret my decision. Being on the board, looking at one of the prettiest landmarks I've ever seen, really reminded me of how lucky I am to be in Hawaii.

Let's move on.

Below are a few pictures I snapped (with some help) of a hike my friends and I did on Sunday. I won't lie, I woke up completely sore and bruised from surfing. My elbows, hips, and even torso was bruised. Beginners luck, I guess? Granted, even with as sore as I was I was still up for a good hike. We settled on the Lighthouse Trail and I was not disappointed.

At the beginning of the trail, at more specifically the first lookout, if you decide to off road your hike you will find yourself faced with a huge boulder that provides one the opportunity to see some great views. Fun fact: you can actually see another island, Kauai, from the trail. While you can't see it in the picture above, what you can see are miles upon miles of endless blue. As small of an island as Oahu is, only when I'm on the edge of this rock do I recognize how disconnected I am from the rest of America. I can't complain, though, as I love being so close to the ocean yet also surrounded by mountains.

End of the trail. Again, I off loaded it with Shannon and ended up on a rock on the side of the island. With my feet dangling off the side, all I could see were the foaming blue waters and side of the island speckled with houses. The lighthouse is accessible, but only by those willing to trespass. While my friends and I decided not to (as we also hiked down to the Makapu'u Tide Pools) it was still an amazing view from all the way up top. Additionally, it's worth noting that as I was hanging out I ate a panini. A great sandwich with a great view.

No story here, just the beauty of the side of the island from the top of the trail. No, this was not from that rock I had been sitting on.

Enjoy the rest of your day, guys!

Until next time,

Hey guys!

I can't believe it's already Wednesday! I have done so much in the past few days that I just had to log on and post.

Firstly, my long week of tests came to a close on Friday. To celebrate, the girls and I went downtown for some boba and then and visited a place called Don Quijote. If you've ever been to an H-Mart, picture that store but combined with a Walmart. I think if you're looking for cheap tourist-y things then Don Quijote is your best bet, but if you're looking for groceries then maybe Walmart is a better option.

After arriving on campus we parted ways and went to bed. The plan was for us to wake up and then tackle Koko Head, given that the girls now want to try their hands at hiking it. Naturally those plans fell through and instead of doing the incline we found ourselves on a 90 minute bus ride headed to Costco. Costco was fun, but too crowded for me to really enjoy myself. We left after probably an hour and spent the long bus ride back trying to come up with a game plan for the rest of the day. Two of the girls wanted to stay home and do homework and laundry, but myself and two others wanted to attend the tailgate and football game. For the majority of the semester our group has done everything hand in hand, so for us to disagree on something was pretty weird. Eventually we decided to split up, and I'm glad we did. Unfortunately the bus took too long getting to the game so we missed the tailgate, but we were able to score some good seats and enjoy 2 quarters and a bit of halftime.

Here's what the view looked like from my seat:

As you can see I was pretty close, but you can also tell that not too many people actually go to the game. I won't go into why.

After the game we went home and ended our night early. I finished up some homework and got ready to do laundry for the next day.

All in all my weekend was pretty uneventful. And Monday, too. Tuesday was my birthday, so it was fun being able to go out to dinner with the girls and go off campus. The city is so accessible from Manoa that there is no excuse not to take advantage of DaBus. No seriously, it runs all day and picks you up from right outside the dorms! This is how the girls and I got to dinner, via DaBus. We rode to Walmart and then walked to a little "Chinese-Korean" restaurant called On Dong. The food was OK, but I wouldn't recommend going there. For a small shop that's not even in Waikiki their prices were insane. I ordered the seaweed soup and had to pay almost $10! One of the girls ordered sweet and sour chicken and had to pay over $20. Also, there is nothing Chinese about the restaurant other than the menu and nothing Korean about the seaweed soup. Not sure how I am supposed to get good luck when eating non-Korean seaweed soup, but we'll see what happens. Maybe my weekend will be good.

After that we went to Safeway and grabbed some cupcakes. By now the time is 9 and we're all pretty drained. It's still a Tuesday and, while we wanted to celebrate, we began to get tired and just wanted to do our homework. Because of this we weren't at Safeway long, and instead returned to the dorms in probably an hour- max.

Once at the dorms the girls sang 'Happy Birthday' to me and refused to eat until I had the first bite. I'm noticing that my friends are all very big on traditions.

And that, in a nutshell, was my week. As it is I'm exhausted and am typing this after having written a 9 page bibliography, so needless to say I'm sure this will contain some spelling and grammar errors. But, like always, I hope you are enjoying my posts and have a great rest of your week. As an added bonus, here's what the outside of the Aloha Stadium looks like:

OH- and did I mention that the UH Band plays the Hawaii Five-O theme song every game? How cool is that?

Until next time,
