My HI Life

A collegiate's take on island life

Hello everyone!

Inspired by my efforts to live a more green lifestyle, I have become quite a fan of the beauty and skincare store, LUSH. Today I wanted to talk about my favorite LUSH products and, hopefully, inspire you to try out some of them for yourself!

Cup O' Coffee

When I say this kicked off my obsession, I mean this kicked it off! The smell is amazing and the scrub itself works very well at riding your skin of dirt and grime. I love reaching for this after a long day, applying a thick layer on my face, and just taking in the coffeehouse smell. After each use I can attest that my skin has felt softer and looks more even, which is perhaps why I always try and apply a layer when I can tell I have a break out coming. I purchased my cup in January and there is still half left! I cannot recommend this mask enough. I like to do a mask on Sundays, before the week starts, and again on Wednesdays, when I'm halfway through the workweek.

Montalbano Shampoo Bar

One word: legendary. The holy grail for girls with oily hair, this shampoo bar exceeded my expectations from the first use. My hair type is thin, flat, and oily, making for one heck of a look after a few days. Because of this I have become accustomed to washing my hair every day! I know, I know, you don't need to lecture me on why that's horrible for my hair, I already know. I just didn't know what else to do. So, in a moment of desperation, I decided to try a shampoo bar at LUSH. Maybe I was intrigued by the lack of packaging, maybe I was curious if the bar would hold up to it's claims. Whatever the reason, I went home with two samples; one of the Montalbano and one of the Honey I Washed My Hair. Simply put, the Montalbano actually did what it is supposed to do, whereas the other bar did what any other drugstore shampoo would do, mask the problem for a day and then require I wash again. If you have overly-oily hair, I cannot stress enough that you should go to the nearest LUSH and, at the very least, ask for a sample. From what I understand, each bar is made with natural, safe ingredients and can last up to 100 washes. That's over three months packed into such a tiny object! All I can say is that I am excited to go back and buy another one.

Sleepy Lotion

Now that LUSH has successfully converted me into a believer of their shampoo bars and a fanatic of their coffee mask, it's only natural I would move onto my next sought-after item: lotion. You've heard me say time and time again how my skin is sensitive and even the slightest application of a lotion other than Hempz has my skin breaking out into what feels like flames. If you couldn't tell, I am very, very hesitant when it comes to buying lotions. I have heard great things about the Sleepy lotion but, given my skin, was too afraid to take the leap without trying some for myself. I will say that the lotion takes a while to absorb, but for the most part I enjoy putting some on my hands before bed and using it to help me unwind. One thing I do like is that the lotion isn't overtly lavender. Meaning that when you apply it you aren't slapped in the face with the fake lavender that some lotions have. The lavender Sleepy lotion is subtle and makes for a very relaxing, soothing feeling once on the skin.

What do you think? Have I convinced you to try your hand at any of these products yet? Let me know if you use any of these or if there is a different product that you enjoy. Hope everyone is having a great week!

Hey everyone,

Essences...what are they, what do they do, and why you'll grow to love them. Those three points are my main topics for this post today, and I hope that by the end of it you will be just as obsessed with them as I am! For my ladies who have never heard about essences, or my girls who need a little more advice on where to look, I hope you all can take away something from this post.

What is an essence?
An essence is a highly concentrated liquid that targets your skin's concern at a cellular level. Wait, what?! I know, it sounds wordy and, admittedly strange, but stay with me here.

What can it do?
Unlike what you're probably thinking, it is not an item that can cover all of your bases. An essence is something to help your routine, not complete it. Although, arguably it is one of the more important steps, don't automatically read about all of the benefits and start thinking that all you need to do is apply some essence and you're good. An essence is a crucial step of skincare that can help target things such as: moisture, hydration, redness, dullness, wrinkles, and more.

Doesn't a serum do the same thing?
Contrary to what many people shrug off as being the same as a serum, or "close enough to", an essence simply does not work the same was as a serum. I can most certainly go into more detail on what a serum is, but let's stick to the focus here. While a serum is thicker than essences, the difference comes in the ingredients. An essence has strong ingredients that target a multitude of areas, whereas a serum has fewer, higher concentrated ingredients that only target specific problems.

How do I apply an essence?
Essences are best followed up after your toner. I take a small amount in the palm of my hand and rub them together, warming up the liquid. Then I gently pat the essence on my skin and wait a few minutes for the product to absorb into my skin before proceeding.

How do I know which essence to use?
This is likely to be the hardest part of your routine, as it always seems to be for mine. Finding the right product takes time, and research, but the fun comes in trying everything out. I have dry, sensitive skin that is prone to redness. For this reason, I often go back and fourth between using the DewyTree Cell Essence and The Essence by TATCHA. DewyTree's Essence focuses on flawless, dewy skin and the product itself is very light and has a very soothing affect on my skin. The TATCHA
essence is a plumping, skin softener with anti-aging properties that has a smell similar to Malibu Rum but absorbs quicker than the DewyTree.

So, what do you think? Have I done a good job of convincing you to try your hand at essences, or are you still a hesitant to add it to your routine? All questions are welcome; I will do my best to help you out!

Hey guys,

Going back to school is an extremely stressful time, an pairing that with the nerves that come with classes can make for an even bigger headache! This week I am going to share with you guys how to curate the perfect skincare regime while also hitting those books.

First, it's important to identify the type of skin you have and what you would like to work on. Similar to working out, proper skincare takes planning, research, and consistency. I have sensitive skin that is dry in Colorado and oily in Hawaii. In addition, I suffer from redness. Knowing these few things can already help me prepare for my new skincare routine; the only requirement is that it must be gentle and help in aiding both dry skin and redness.

Here comes the fun part! After you have determined what you need to buy, you will need to do some research on the best products for you.

But, like many other aspects of life, you cannot just leave good skin up to the work your skincare will do. You will also need to modify your diet (when needed) and make some lifestyle changes. I have modified my habits in many different ways, from using an aromatherapy diffuser, a salt lamp, and even going dairy free. Out of all of these ways, while each have their benefit, let me highlight the one I am sure you are all most curious about: the salt lamp.

As crazy as it sounds, especially when the other options are much more logical, I do stand by the fact that salt lamps have health benefits. The biggest comes in the form of its purifying ability. With skin being our biggest organ, and our most outer organ, it is vital that we protect the air around us to limit the amount of impurities. Notably, salt lamps put out negative ions that help soothe and calm the atmosphere around us, combating our own anxiety. I was generously given* a salt lamp to try out for myself, and since trying it I can confirm that the space around me does feel more calming and at peace. If you haven't already, perhaps ad a salt lamp is something worth adding to your school shopping list!

Here is a link to buy your own salt lamp.

Thank you to Sunnest for allowing me to review and discuss my thoughts on salt lamps. All opinions are of my own.
