How to Visit Oahu's Secret Island

by - March 05, 2018

Hey everyone,

Oahu might be gloomy but that doesn't mean I haven't stopped exploring! This past week Daniel and I had the chance to visit Oahu's "Secret Island" (own and ran by Kualoa Ranch). Because I know how sought-after a place this can be, I'm going to share with you guys how I was fortunate enough to see the beautiful pier on the Moliili Fishpond.

First, its best to know where to start. Daniel and I parked at Campground A which is located directly across the street from the Kualoa Ranch. This is both a campground and a beach, so there's a good chance that you won't be alone here. Don't worry, these people won't be where you're going.

Begin by walking along the beach towards the woods. For reference, walk alongside Chinamans Hat, not away from it! After turning around the first bend, at which you'll second-guess where you're going, you need to keep heading until you reach Campground B. There are a number of ways you could continue from here, but to be on the safe side Daniel and I took the trail through the woods and proceeded through that before reaching Secret Island.

Its important to note that at this point, upon leaving the trail, you have to be careful walking into the property. I have read that this is considered trespassing, and depending on the day you can either be let through or turned around and told to leave. Once you leave the first trail I would advise you not to go back onto the beach. This is one of the easiest ways that you can make yourself known to not be from the tour groups, and as such I would recommend (and even encourage) you follow the second trail inside the woods. It's straightforward and leads you right to the changing rooms which are located right next to the piers.

On Saturday, typically when people get turned around, Daniel and I were the lucky ones who made it far enough to where we were told both, "You can't be here," and then also told, "Ok make it quick". While we got lucky, again, not everyone does. Be careful with who you talk to, because I guarantee not every worker is as nice as ours was.

We went as quick as we could, but how could you rush with a view like this?

Of course, even though the weather was gloomy we still had a lot of fun. We took our pictures and soon made the walk back through the beaches and campgrounds until we reached our car, muddy and swatting away at the mosquitoes that had followed us back. It was one of those places that you can't really explain, you just have to visit. It's unfortunate that you can't visit this place unless you pay to go, but for those willing, the risk is worth the finding.

Until next time,

Aislinn
